The universe is not expanding more quickly. Instead imagine you and a friend are at the North pole and you both walk in opposite directions from each other. Looking back from the way you came you seem to be getting further away from each other. But after you have passed the equator and looking back from the way you came you are still getting further away from each other. But looking over the journey ahead you are getting closer together.

Now imagine the universe as a multi-dimensional sphere and all matter is travelling away from the big bang (metaphorically the North Pole) and getting closer to each other (the South Pole). As this happens the mutual gravitational attraction is speeding things up. Therefore the conservation of energy can remain intact. No dark matter is needed either.
